Waste management throughout Ukraine
Disposal of monitors is a complex process that can be trusted only to specialized companies. Hazardous materials must be recycled in accordance with legal requirements.
Monitors contain such hazardous substances:
These substances have strong toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. Monitors are also a source of valuable resources that can be reused, conserving the earth’s natural resources.
Types of monitors
The OLED monitor screen consists of diodes that are made of organic compounds. Such monitors give a clearer and brighter image, they are energy-saving and environmentally friendly. The production of an OLED monitor does not use mercury, which is good for the environment. Unfortunately, the life of organic materials is small, so you need to frequently change monitors of this type, creating additional waste.
The design of LCD screens (liquid crystal display) uses conventional LEDs, which consume a few tens of percent less energy than traditional monitors. Mercury is also not used here, and their design (in particular, a thin case) saves the space required for the disposal of electrical waste.
The plasma screen consists of two panels, between which there are many small cells, and the empty spaces around them are filled with gas. Plasma screens include chemical phosphor and plasma. Like LCD monitors, they also do not take up much space, but consume much more electricity.
CRT monitors (cathode ray tube) provide good image quality from any angle. In addition, CRTs consume a lot of electricity, they are heavy and large, and also emit harmful electromagnetic radiation. Although manufacturers are constantly improving technology, electrical waste is still dangerous for our planet. Therefore, before replacing the old monitor with a new model, you should find an e-waste recycling company, where professionals will safely dispose of old equipment and recycle office equipment for recycling.
The equipment used may contain substances (for example, lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury bromide, freon) that are hazardous to human health, life and the environment. A typical CRT monitor contains approximately 1,36 kg of lead. CRT monitors are considered hazardous waste to the environment, which is why it is forbidden to simply throw them away at the end of their service life. Recycling CRT monitors is an important factor in combating the high levels of waste found at landfills. Recycling CRT monitors helps combat unwanted hazardous waste from the environment.
For disposal of the device in an inappropriate place or for refusal to eliminate it is subject to a large fine. It should be noted that electrical waste is becoming a serious and fastest growing type of garbage. According to forecasts, in the coming years, their number will grow steadily and reach 12 million tons (and this is already in the 2020 year). Disposal of monitors will prevent negative consequences for the environment and human and animal health.
The process of recycling CRT monitors consists of three stages. The first step is to separate the kinescope from the body. This is done on special pre-disassembly lines. At the next stage, a semi-automatic separation of the screen and tube glass takes place. Before the glass enters the glass factory, it is subjected to the process of purification from the phosphor, and after - homogenization.
In the process of processing monitors, the most important thing is to quickly and accurately separate the picture tubes and safely remove the phosphor contained. Recycling of flat screens is as important as recycling and recycling CRT monitors, since arsenic and mercury are standard materials used in liquid crystal displays (LCD displays). Arsenic is added during the production of high-performance glass used in LCD displays to prevent the formation of defects, and fluorescent lamps used to illuminate LCD displays contain small amounts of mercury.
Almost 98% LCD monitors can be recycled. All plastics are removed for processing into new products. Printed circuit boards can be recovered after processing LCD displays and melted to extract valuable metals. Cables are cleaned for the disposal of copper and other metals.
